6 *Truly* Caffeine-Free Starbucks Drinks You Have to Try
Sometimes it feels impossible to avoid caffeine. From M&M’s to Lipton sweet tea and all those in between— it’s everywhere. But after hearing about the negative effects of long-term usage, including withdrawal symptoms, I decided to give it a shot— while still getting my Starbucks fix, of course!
The first thing I realized is that “decaf” Starbucks drinks actually still contain a small amount of caffeine. This amount is said to be up to 16 mg in a Starbucks decaf espresso shot according to a study published in the Journal of Analytical Toxicology, and around 25 mg in a Grande decaf brew as listed on Starbucks’ website. The Toxicology study notes that these amounts may still have an impact on those “vulnerable to caffeine effects.” So, in the interest of accuracy, here are six Starbucks drinks that are *actually* caffeine-free.
1. Steamers & Crèmes
These hot drinks are sure to warm you up on a blustery day. For a great hot chocolate substitute, ask your barista for a Steamer with chocolate flavoring. Or try one of their specials, like the Vanilla Steamer, Caramel Brûlée Crème, and Cinnamon Dolce Crème.
2. Herbal teas
Looking for some tea without the accompanying jitters? Swap out your go-to green, chai, or black tea for one of Starbucks herbal teas. Comes in Peach Tranquility and Mint Majesty flavors. Great add-ins include honey with a spike of milk.
3. Crème Frappuccinos (sans chocolate, matcha, or chai)
With the exception of the chocolate, matcha, and chai flavors, Crème Frappuccinos are a wonderful non-caffeinated substitute for the beloved Frappe. Experience classics like Vanilla Bean, Strawberry, and Caramel Ribbon Crunch. Crème Frappuccinos are basically just milkshakes, but hey, what’s the matter with that?
4. Iced Passion Tango tea
Iced Passion Tango tea and tea-lemonade are great iced versions of the herbal teas. The tea-lemonade brings to mind a can of Arizona’s Arnold Palmer Half & Half. Perfect drink for warmer weather.
5. Lemonade
Great caffeine-free alternative to the Refresher drinks. Comes in regular and Blended Strawberry flavors.
6. Caramel Apple Spice
My personal favorite— with
the cider base, whipped cream, and caramel topping, it tastes exactly like apple pie. Or try the Steamed Apple Juice for a great cider without the extra flavorings.
